Tam lets you hit record and get things done: a transcript, notes, answers, and live captions across the languages your family speaks. To do that well, some of what you record is sent to two services we chose carefully. This page says exactly what, when, and why, in plain words.
- Your notes, transcripts, and voiceprints are saved on your phone or Mac, not on our servers.
- Tam has no accounts, no ads, no analytics, and no tracking. We don't sell or share data with anyone for marketing.
- Audio streams to Soniox for live transcription. Soniox doesn't keep it.
- Text goes through our relay to Claude by Anthropic to write notes, answer questions, and translate. Our relay keeps no text and no logs.
- The only thing we store is how much each subscription or free plan has used, against an anonymous number from Apple. It deletes itself.
What stays on your device
- Notes and transcripts. Saved as files inside Tam on your phone or Mac. Delete a note and it's gone; delete Tam and all of them go with it.
- Voiceprints. To tell speakers apart, Tam turns short stretches of each voice into a voiceprint, a list of numbers that describes how a voice sounds. Voiceprints, and the names you give to voices Tam should remember, are made and kept on your device only. They are never sent to us, Soniox, or Anthropic. You can forget a remembered voice in Tam at any time.
- Recordings. Tam doesn't save the audio of a recording. It turns sound into words as you go and keeps the words.
- On-device transcription and language detection. Once Tam knows the language, English, Spanish, Portuguese and other languages your phone or Mac understands are transcribed on the device itself.
- Reading captions aloud. When Tam reads captions into your earbuds, it uses your device's own voices.
If you back up your phone or Mac (for example with iCloud Backup or Time Machine), your Tam notes are part of that backup, under your control and the backup provider's terms.
What leaves your device, and why
Soniox: live transcription
When you're online, the first seconds of every recording stream to Soniox so words appear right away in any language while Tam works out which language you're speaking. After that, languages your device handles well move to on-device transcription, and the rest (such as Vietnamese, Indonesian, Thai and Filipino) stay on Soniox for the whole recording.
Audio goes straight from your device to Soniox over an encrypted connection; it never passes through our servers. To connect, Tam gets a single-use key from our relay that expires shortly after. Soniox is told only a scrambled (SHA-256) form of your anonymous subscription number, never your name or Apple ID.
Soniox states that it processes real-time audio without storing it and doesn't use customer audio or transcripts to train its models. See Soniox's privacy policy.
Tam's relay and Claude by Anthropic: notes, questions, captions
When Tam writes notes, answers a question you ask about a conversation, suggests a title, translates a caption, or catches you up, it sends the text of that conversation (never audio, never voiceprints) to our relay, which passes it to Anthropic's Claude and streams the answer back.
The relay is a small server we run on Cloudflare. It doesn't write conversation text or answers anywhere and keeps no request logs. Anthropic receives the text under its commercial terms, which don't allow it to train models on that text. Anthropic deletes it within 30 days, unless it's flagged for violating Anthropic's usage policy, in which case it may be kept longer to enforce that policy. See Anthropic's privacy policy.
Apple: payments
Subscriptions are bought and managed through Apple. We never see your name, email, or payment details. Apple gives Tam a signed proof of purchase containing an anonymous transaction number, which our relay checks to know you're subscribed.
Cloudflare: hosting
Our relay and this website run on Cloudflare. Like any network, Cloudflare handles your IP address to deliver requests and protect against abuse. We've turned off request logging for the relay. This website uses no cookies and no analytics.
What we store
To keep Tam affordable and stop abuse, our relay counts usage. It stores:
- Subscriptions: how much each subscription has used this billing period, in dollars and cents, under Apple's anonymous transaction number. Deleted a week after the period ends.
- Free plan: how many minutes you recorded this month, under an anonymous number Apple assigns to your download of Tam, plus random IDs for each recording so none is counted twice. Deleted automatically about 40 days after your last recording that month.
- Daily totals: overall usage across everyone, with no numbers tied to anyone. Deleted a few days later.
That's all. There's nothing tied to your name, email, or Apple ID, and no copy of anything you said.
Recording other people
Tam records conversations, and on a Mac it can record both sides of a call. Many places require everyone's consent before a conversation is recorded. Please tell people when Tam is listening, and follow the law where you are. You're responsible for how you use Tam and for the notes you keep.
Your choices
- Delete anything: notes and remembered voices can be deleted in Tam. Deleting Tam deletes everything it saved on that device.
- Stay off the cloud: without a connection, Tam transcribes on your device in the languages it supports. Notes, answers and captions need the cloud and wait until you're back online.
- Cancel: manage or cancel your subscription in your Apple account settings.
- Ask us: depending on where you live (for example under GDPR in Europe or CCPA in California), you can ask what data we have about you, ask us to delete it, or object to how it's used. Since we hold only anonymous usage counts that expire on their own, there's usually nothing to find, but write to us and we'll help.
Children
Tam isn't meant for children under 13 (or under 16 where local law sets a higher age), and we don't knowingly collect anything from them.
Changes
If we change what Tam sends or stores, we'll update this page and the date above before the change takes effect.
